A small region in the rostral dorsolateral pontine tegmentum was significantly associated with coma-causing lesions. In healthy adults, this brainstem site was functionally connected to the ventral anterior insula (AI) and pregenual anterior cingulate cortex (pACC). These cortical areas aligned poorly with previously defined resting-state networks, better matching the distribution of von Economo neurons. Finally, connectivity between the AI and pACC was disrupted in patients with disorders of consciousness, and to a greater degree than other brain networks.
The tale of crisis, self-image, and ego
Instant feedbacks, prompt responses and supportive structures in one’s working or personal space are the ideal attitudes because it helps one to work effectively and avoid low self-esteem fallouts. This can be really appreciated when the lacunae period arrives.
What is the lacunae period? It is a period where a person is not able to receive the above-mentioned behaviors from the surrounding and left alone to judge their own position. A person tends to fill the void with the preconceived notions, judgment, and templates about a self.
If the person has a habit of negative self-talking and blaming oneself chronically then he or she would do the same in the lacunae period to fill the gaps between the expectations and performance. Negative self-judgment would discourage them further which would affect their performance subsequently.
The lacunae period in those who try to stay optimistic would not harm much as due to the positive self-image inside, they try to replace these lacunae with the reassurance and self-help cognitive strategies. The positive self-image is comprised upon robust resourcefulness, happiness, strong and contended relationships, independence and trust.
The term resourcefulness is defined by positive interpersonal experiences and achievements on collective and individual grounds. All these factors substantiate one’s persona to deal with strange, unpredicted and difficult situations.
Lacunae period is an inevitable event of life, either in a personal setting or professional environment. It is hard to stay strong and competent under stressful, unsupportive or in hostile setups for long. In these critical situations, personal substance contributes a lot to keep oneself strong enough to trust his/her decisions, judgment and perceptions.
The substantial ego is well-equipped to deal with such crisis as it has to come up with mature and strong defense mechanisms. The coping tactics are defined by the precise balance between the pleasure-driven body (id) and principle-driven body (superego). The equilibrium is easy to establish but difficult to maintain for the long term. The viable bridge is built upon the sustained harmony between these two bodies. The upheaval in the internal or external environment may destabilize its steadiness. The guards to prevent such conditions are almost always on alert. The subtle maladaptation in habits, thinking, perception, interests and activities may disintegrate it.
The ego is a basic functional unit of a human psyche which works to resolve conflicts and comes forth with the compatible solutions. The stronger the ego earlier will be the resolution with more workable plans.
The model of human actualization has largely depended on awareness of ego, its strength, and deficiencies, its role in decision, failures and achievements and the contributing factors of sustainability and stability. the extent of our self-knowledge towards all these measures would rescue the ego from the crisis and helps it functioning amid pitfalls and setbacks too.
The nature of tribulations carries mysterious messages for the human mind and soul. It only reveals when one really wants to see it without any stereotypical notion, biased judgment or prejudiced perception.
It carries a message to induce flexibility and cause us to adapt to the new situations or challenges, which sound quite hard at first. The reason being difficult is simply because of a wear and tear phenomenon that one gets through in order to suffer, learn and ultimately to change.
The inner eye of wisdom needs to be on guard to the lower self of desires and lust to see through the slits of a weave. The pain carries messages to amend the wounds of a soul, and it nourishes the spirit to strengthen out. It builds resilience, determination, and tenacity within a person. The pain acts as a teacher as it fills and substantiates the personal aura.
One only gets to know the real meaning, worth and the essence of pain when he or she tends to read history, biographies, listen to people, tries to get an insight into the different life stories and train oneself to see events or persons from ‘not so instant and impulsive perspective/ready-made template of analysis’ .
Today, the world is more pleasure driven body than before. From the basic marketing techniques to the most complicated human surgeries, all are designed to draw enormous and infinite magnitude of luxuries and beauty to one’s life and exclude all the possible elements of pain, suffering, and challenges. The sheer facilitation of the human body to feel the urge of comfort has consolidated the component of id at the unconscious level. Thus, it has been hard to refrain or resist the temptation of easiness in every domain of life.
Human personality is rich with diverse features, aspects and moods. It is revealed through many minor and major challenges when different behaviours come into play. Most of us keep thinking of the fact that despite working on our personalities, we are not able to shine out, excel or achieve what we want. The basic factor among many which have been identified is our leisurely hour and how we want to spend it. It is the largely ignored and neglected aspect of one’s life and maybe that is why one is not able to achieve much in life despite major and sophisticated efforts.
The leisure hours have paramount importance in building one’s strength and adding charm to personality. What we think, ponder and get ourselves engages into define our persona to the great extent.
It constitutes the major part in formulating our vision, goals, perspectives for and about life. The leisurely activities fill us with productive or destructive thoughts that ultimately define us and our future.
Sometimes, we prefer active options over the inactive meditation. We choose to engage ourselves in some action based theme as our outlets to fill our free time. The nature, depth and intensity of an action influence our personality from all aspects. It colours our views for relationships, events and shapes the way we infer or analyse.
It is the most important part to emphasise. The type of hobby which we employ to provide us resourceful pleasure and motivation for routine tasks determines our cognition, moods, attitudes and perception. Not merely this but research tells us the effectiveness of productive hobbies in one’s life too.
The current account in conjunction with the literature-based evidence concludes direct relationship of these two variables, Personality and leisure activities. It includes that the fervent habit of reading and writing1 has proved its role as a healer in a different type of mental illnesses. The sharing outlets and group -based activities2 with participatory functions enhance memory, cognition; improve mood and increase oxytocin, a love hormone. The effect of positive self-talking3 surfaces out in the form of boosted self-esteem, confidence and self-reliance, it also improves interaction and self-image, which later substantiate and enrich oneself completely.
The above components are essential and necessary ingredients to keep in mind when one thinks about personal grooming.

When Dorothy is at home
This stage reflects the human existential, primitive and regressive form of consciousness in which trivial things matter a lot and a person tries to deal with the fantasy and maladaptive defense mechanisms like dissociation (getting away from the real situation) to get relief. In this play, Dorothy runs away from her home. Home is that human’s life reality which causes pain and suffering. And her running away was one of the maladaptive coping mechanisms to avoid the pain
Dorothy at palmist’s home
This stage is another reflection of a human behavior where the expectation for the best is desired after one’s scrawny plans and initiatives. Her wonder and interest towards the magician to know her fate reveals her state of ignorance and impatience. Palmist demonstrates the slip-ups of one’s life that can make the person realize his or her mistake. On realizing her mistake she tries to return back to home, but it becomes too difficult for her by then to return.
The turmoil in one’s life after the first wrong step has been taken.
The land of munchkins
This is the wonderland of our desires and wishes. How we see world’s favors, resources, materials, money, pomposity, and illustration. The Glinda is a parental image in our unconscious that shows us the path of goodness but never accompanies us. (Parents are with us all the time through their prayers. They give us values and advice to cover the journey of life all alone, achieving the goals and ambitions to shine in this world, but they don’t bear the pains of our routes). In the same way, Glinda prays for her and asks her to go to the wizard of Oz for the ultimate attainment and absolute salvation (series of trials in life is to make decisions to save oneself from Satan, poverty, sin and the ebb) .
The wicked witch of the west is a devil and id-driven (Freudian concept) authority of our unconscious part. Glinda asks Dorothy to follow the yellow brick road (the goodness) to get away from evil and never put off her gifted shoes.
The first encounter highlights the importance of a brain being a principle organ of one’s intellectual life. Scarecrow laments the deficiency of intellect and logic in his life.
The second meeting shows the heart as another necessity for living a thoughtful and sensible life. The strength which comes without the essence of love and compassion is nothing but temporary and insubstantial.
The concept of Kingship without the element of courage is futile. The unintentional scream of Dorothy towards lion exhibits lion’s timid nature.
This scream also shows the power of veracity when one stands against the oppression out of anger and frustration then it unravels various forged layers which are wrapped on our perception, only then the unclouded perception can transparently analyze situations and dynamics.
She sleeps in a poppy field
This scene shows the perfect ensemble of the devil and God’s power. She sleeps in a field under the influence of a devil’s trick but gets up due to Glinda’s prayer. It depicts that although devil keeps running after a human being to get him or her into the downward spiral of sin and distraction, but his tricks don’t work without the final thought by the Higher Entity. The scene also reflects the appearance of Glinda in the background as a prayer of parents (being with their children all the time and helping them at the time of crisis).
Here comes the realization of world’s most desired achievement as one’s ultimate aim of existence and purpose of life. The joy which takes place after seeing the conceived goal is the reflection of human’s infatuation with his or her desire. Their amazement on seeing the city of Oz is the demonstration of this attribute.
The wizard is a pleasure driven body who asks us to run further towards our estimated, desired and most wanted ambition. In the attainment of our goal, we happen to kill the lassitude, weariness, and evil and walk an extra mile.
When we almost lose everything in the persuasion of our desires but don’t find the expected outcome on time then it upsets us. The sense of collectivity for oneself comes then. The crumble of one’s dream is the reality of human existence. One of the ultimate purposes of life is a hard realization to experience the failure.
Brain, heart, and courage
The world and society norms provoke us to follow the rituals of growth like getting a higher degree, finding a good job, getting a good match so that you can stay happy. The sources of comfort and happiness have nothing to do with the external resources and materialistic gains. It deals with the personal awareness regarding oneself.
The personal knowledge about the purpose of existence, life and self-identity are the themes which can bring happiness and serenity.
The bad wizard is an example of this. When Dorothy on instructions of Glinda (e.g. parents, guardians, teachers, mentors and guides) decides to go to the wizard where she finds its real worth, although, she discovers it as fake and superficial. Nonetheless, the wizard reassures everyone about the qualities they already have but they are not aware of it.
Thus, all of them were searching it out.
Dorothy’s realization about her home, in the end, is the reflection of the internal journey towards the soul and its significance as a source of happiness.
Seeing the brutality of a human being in a current age, one can sense the urge to dig out the reasons behind the factors, which overturn one’s nature to become vultures and cold-blooded human in order to pursue their goals.
Not to be surprised but various psychosocial reasons lie behind it. Naming the most gruesome political groups, rebellion schisms and radical factions, which have jeopardized people’s lives for decades and paralysed their societies to its deepest cores and instigated the seeds of learned helplessness within the very soul of each individual.
Lack of personal, social and religious identity-
This is true in reference to:
1) Underprivileged mothering; where mothers may be poorly educated to impart the social, religious or ethical knowledge or they might be busy to do so (due to poverty)
2) Deprived financial resources to get education
3) Little religious understanding to defend or identify oneself
Insignificant social attachment –
The above factor comes into play when a child is in impoverished condition physically and mentally. The dissatisfaction that arises from the lap of shattered dreams and unseen goals can easily indulge one to look for foreign objectives in order to internalize their identities, which has never been there before.
The excitement, which is brought by the new face, lures one to swiftly detach from the previous void self and gets into the new one.
Extreme terror –
Extreme nature of plundering, terror, chaos and social disarray renders one to idealise death over the devalued state of a life. In the same way, stark poverty can lead to the similar mental status.
Fantasy, the coping –
The utter embitterment of life unconsciously dissociates one from the dark realities in order to avoid the pain caused by it. The use of immature coping strategy mostly surfaces out to maintain the self-equilibrium, namely fantasy. The use of fantasy predisposes one to quickly trust other beliefs about life, death, hereafter and build up to goals upon others beliefs. Here, we can use the example of radical religiopolitical parties that consider beautiful houris would be rewarded to murderers, those who kill people from different faiths.
The constant reverberation (by media, specific groups, influential resources of information and contact) about others (target) as evil, filthy, deprecating, toxic and harmful; and belittling their lives, values and importance to none help proponents influence their victims to attack the target with little or no remorse and to consider their treatment to enemies as justified.
